I'm here in northern California, and wanting to make a veggie dish highlighting the flavors of Hawai'i (and with more than pineapple and mac nuts). Can someone tell me what vegetables are in season and in the stores there right now? Are there differences from island to island? I'm just curious ... and I'm going to cross-post this, to cover all my bases.

Oh goodie! I am so happy this food thread got off the ground! Mahalo!

I'm really interested in uses of poi. I happen to like it straight, but I've also been experimenting with using it in baking, and smoothies. When I get it, sometimes I have it for breakfast, with a little milk and honey. I am lucky in that just a few blocks from where a live, there is a Japanese market that imports poi (and seasonings for making ahi poke and good Portuguese sausages without MSG, and other Hawaiian foods) on a weekly basis. I've just had a horrible battle with some digestive problems and you know what, I bet I should have been eating poi while I was sick. It's medicine as well as food!

It seems to me that one of the best things we can do for the 'aina is to support taro (kalo) farmers over there. Now I know sometimes there are poi shortages in Hawai'i, and so it seems unfair to have it over here on the mainland when the locals can't get it, but it's a healthy food and culturally so important that if there was a bigger market for it, then perhaps more people there could go back to the lo'i and cultivate. It might make a big difference to the sustainability of the local economy too.

I'll get some recipes up ASAP. Thanks for those links below!
