Thanks for posting! It's wonderful you are learning about your heritage. I hope you post as many questions as you like, and that more people respond (besides me).
You have a wonderful heritage as kanaka maoli, and much to be proud of. Would you like to share with the group what you have been learning so far? It would be wonderful to hear!

Re: New Here
Tue, June 13, 2006 - 3:05 AMMy oldest sister teaches me what she can when she can. She sent me the book Shark Dialogues by Kiana Davenport. I have learned that I am hapa haole. Also it tells the story of a family but it sets it in actual history. It tells of the leprosy, the imprisonment of Queen Lil'uokalani, the sugar and coffee industry, the settling of the whites, and the treatment they dished out to native Hawaiians. Mostly, it taught me that 'Ohana is everything. I have been looking at websites and ordering more books. Ones that are not fiction. I have a lot to learn but have only been at it for a few months.
Can you recommend any books I can read that will help me in my learning?
Mahalo

How great that your older sister is teaching you! Shark Dialogues is a powerful book! I read it a few years ago. Unfortunately, it has a segment that is plagarized, taken from another much more obscure book, and this makes me sad. Kiana Davenport is too good a writer to have risked tarnishing her work in this way. One day this will be known in the publishing community, and she'll have to take a little heat for it. Aloha ino!
I will post a reading list on another thread. There are so many great books!!! Anything by Mary Kawena Pukui, for starters. And get a copy of the hardbound Hawaiian English dictionary if you don't have it already. Native Books Hawai'i is a great bookstore and website. I'll find the URL and put it in the booklist. Get your books from them, and support a Native Hawaiian business.
What books have you ordered already?

Re: New Here
Tue, June 13, 2006 - 1:47 PMThank you. So far I have only ordered a couple of cookbooks as I am not sure of the level of some of the books I find. I will try this website and perhaps I will have a better idea of what to start with. I will also check out Ms. Pukui and get the dictionary as soon as possible. My sister is a very busy woman and so I am trying not to add to her workload. This way I can learn both ways.

That's what we're missing! A food thread!!! I get really happy when I cook Hawaiian food--just the standards like haupia or kalua pig, or lomi salmon. I like making poke too.
Would you believe I live within walking distance of a store that brings in poi from Hawai'i, every week?
Share your adventures in cooking, if you like. It would be fun!

Re: New Here
Wed, June 14, 2006 - 7:49 AMI have no idea what these dishes are except poi. I am waiting for my books to come in. But when they come in I will share them. I am wondering how hard it will be to find the ingredients here as I have to get ingredients for Mexican food over the internet. But I will probably do the same thing with Hawaiian ingredients if I have to. I am looking forward to it.
